SEO, or to use the correct term, Search engine optimisation, is a process of strategies, techniques and tactics used to increase the amount of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine such as Google.
There are two main factors of SEO in regards to your website; on-site and off-site. Today, we will just be focusing on off-site SEO.
Ok, so first question; what is the difference between off-site SEO and on-site SEO?
Onsite SEO is web optimisation done directly to your website by yourself. Offsite SEO is web optimisation done outside of your website. These factors are off-site in that they are not directly controlled by the coding on your page.
Ok, so next question; how can I use off-site SEO? Off-site SEO can be used in many different forms, the main ones being link-building and social media. When used relevantly, they can be extremely effective, however be warned of the BLACK HAT!!!
I know, I know, you must have so many more questions but if you carry on reading I will be able to answer the following the questions;

The first key tip with regards to off-site SEO is the use of link-building.
Backlinks are incoming hyperlinks from one web page to another website. Also called an Inbound Link, these links are important in determining the popularity or importance of your website.
Back linking is an effective link building strategy that can maximise your link popularity over the internet which in turn can help increase your ranking in search engines. The number of inbound links to your site is also considered by search engines to give you a ranking. As you receive a higher page ranking, it becomes easier for you to receive more links in future.
Link building is one of the best SEO activities that can help in increasing your search engine ranking. This means that they can effectively help your website in getting a high position in most search engine result pages.
Link building will also be helpful in increasing traffic to your site.
This SEO process is a cost-effective method of advertising, as you get a chance to advertise your business on other sites absolutely for FREE! (Can you believe it?). Although, it is important to use relevant backlinks. For example if you are on Osteopath, make sure you register your business with directories appropriate to your profession such as “GoodTherapy.org” and “Osteopathy Plus”.
Another key tip of off-site SEO is ensuring you use social media in order to promote your practice.
In recent years, social media has become hugely popular and having a strong social media presence can massively benefit your website.
Social “signals” such as Facebook likes, Twitter retweets, Instagram follower count, tweets linking to your site and pages, are all noticed by search engine algorithms and help contribute positively to the SEO of your website.
One way to utilise your social media effectively and appropriately is through having active business Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and LinkedIn accounts. It also helps to have these accounts on your websites, linking them via social media icons.
You can also promote your latest news and views in your social media presence and ask/invite others to like. For example, if you are offering a new acupuncture service at your clinic, then TWEET about it! It is a great way for current and potential patients to find out.
Now my third and final tip is arguably the MOST IMPORTANT. If you take anything out of this article, it needs to be this; the avoidance of the “BLACK HAT”!
Black hat SEO refers to the use of aggressive SEO strategies, techniques and tactics that focus only on search engines and not a human audience, and usually does not obey search engines guidelines.
Black hat SEO involves a range of different techniques from keyword stuffing (a big no-no), the use of unrelated keywords, cloaking and especially spamming via social networks and blogs.
Many people have started using these black hat techniques as they see it as an easy and quick way of getting financial return through their website. However DON’T BE FOOLED! Black hat SEO can result in your website being banned permanently from search engines.
By following these key 3 tips above you will definitely be on your way to using off-site SEO correctly and effectively which will see you organically climb search engines, resulting in more traffic being driven to your website and ultimately an increase in patients contacting you for an appointment.
