Underneath all the content on your website, the images, the text, the videos, lies your web pages’ code.

Essentially, coding is when the webmaster tells a computer what you want it to do, which involves typing in step-by-step commands for the computer to follow.

Search engines “read” this code to decide where your web pages should appear in their indexes for a given search query.

A lot of SEO comes down to what’s in your source code.

Today we will be discussing all the vital elements needed in the code to make your site a success.

The code of your website is vital in terms of establishing its ranking in search engines and it is split into several different key parts;

Title Tags

The title tags on your website informs search engines (and users) what the page is about. It should be under 70 characters and include your business name and relevant keywords to your services and / or location. This tag is placed between the <HEAD> </HEAD> tags near the top of the HTML code for the page.

Meta Description

The meta descriptions on your website are vital as it provides viewers and search engines a bit more insight into what your website is about. Your meta descriptions need to be written with your audience in mind therefore you need to ensure it includes your website’s main keywords as the description actually appears in Google.

The H1 is one of the most important places to put keywords on your website. The H1 acts as your page’s title therefore it is crucial it includes the main keywords for the page.

Alt tags

All search engines crawl web pages. They are easily able to understand text however find images difficult to read. This is why an alt tag is necessary. An alt tag is used to describe to search engines what the image is showing. In turn, this allows search engines to give users better results when performing an image search.

Header / Footer

Footer and header codes can be very beneficial to a website. They’re great places to put verification tracking tags from third party services such as Google analytics.

All the above are just a few things your website needs in order to be successful, however they are almost pointless if you don’t embed your practice’s main keywords within them.

Keywords are the words or phrases that Internet users type into search engines to find what they are looking for.

Keywords are very important for every business as they drive targeted web traffic to your website for free. When done well, using the right keywords can drive people looking for the services you provide, to your website.

Tools online such as Wordtracker can help you research relevant keywords to your business. They provide a good insight into how many users are search for a certain keyword or how much competition there is for a particular keyword.

For practices like yourselves, you should be including your location plus the services you offer and conditions you treat in order to increase the chances of someone finding your clinic over your competition.

Understanding the basics of source code will help you understand how things work on your website. It is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the basic fundamental ideas behind coding so you can make sure your site is doing everything possible to rank highly in search engines.
